Superbad (Mottola, 2007)

I was thinking I hadn’t seen any movies recently, and I realized I completely forgot to write about Superbad. I kind of let too much time pass between seeing it and writing this, so I’m not going to go into detail.

Bottom line is this movie was hilarious.  It’s the best teen comedy I’ve seen in a while.  From what I understand, Seth Rogen and his writing partner had this script in the works since they were 13; I hope that their next project doesn’t take that long to develop, and that it’s this good.

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet

This is a trailer for a stunningly beautiful shooter based on the art of Michel Gagné — his Insanely Twisted Shadow Puppets animation series in particular.

The style is reminiscent of Limbo, an indie game that’s been in development for a while but unfortunately hasn’t had any status updates for some time on the website beyond the original trailer.

Let’s hope both of these titles see release sometime soon…

Pokémon Pearl (Nintendo DS)

Penny Arcade strip

Pearl isn’t the first Pokémon game I’ve played, but it’s the first I’ve actually bought. The first one I played was Red for the Game Boy, which I never finished because I got bored with the game. Pearl doesn’t stray far from Red; It pretty much feels like exactly the same game, maybe with a few new types of items and Pokémon, except this time it’s kept me engaged so far.

The game definitely looks quite a bit better than its predecessors, especially with the addition of 3D buildings to the environments, but unfortunately battle still looks exactly the same. After seeing the success of Square’s revision of Final Fantasy III for the DS, I would have hoped for some nice 3D Pokémon models. The way the battle system works hasn’t changed either, but that’s not really a bad thing, because of the target audience for the game. The simplicity also lends itself to easy touch-screen controls for battle, with on-screen buttons big enough to tap with fingers, which speed up battles considerably.

Overall, the game is a fun distraction, but I don’t plan on keeping it after finishing it. I’d rather sell it to try something with a bit more depth and possibly additional replay value.

The Simpsons Movie (Silverman, 2007)

The Simpsons Movie can be called a movie just by virtue of its running time. Honestly it didn’t feel much bigger than a normal episode to me in terms of production; its just an episode with an 87 minute running time and no commercials.

That being said, while it just felt like a long episode, it was a very good episode.  There’s a slight lull in the second act, but other than that it’s full of laughs.  I haven’t watched the show very often at all in recent years, but I have to say this was better than any new episode I’d seen in that time period.  I think they should cancel the show, but make a movie every year.  Either a full feature length like this one, or maybe a collection of four 20 minute or so stories, like one of my favorite episodes, “22 Short Films About Springfield.”

Fantastic Four 2 (Story, 2007)

Fantastic Four 2 poster

This movie is barely worth mentioning, but I thought I should write something about it anyway.

My view of the first movie in this series was that it was very bland and flavorless, much like plain oatmeal. The second movie is very much like its predecessor, only a little less so. The reason for this is the Silver Surfer scenes and effects, some of which are stellar, but unfortunately too short to really redeem the movie.

Like the first, this movie still lacks the pathos of the better Fantastic Four comics that I’ve read, even though the tone seems faithful to the classic books, which in this case is a bad thing.

Sorry this took so long to get on here. Better late than never, eh?
